e' sporean blogs: Merlion Conquered
ZuLdaniaL Listening to: Samudera - Salam Sejahtera
a mythical creature with the head of a lion and the body of a fish... a national emblem of the country that im proud of [ceh deh bah]... Singapore... it can be found on many fountains throughout the country... the tallest one being situated at one of Singapore's own smaller island known as Sentosa....how did the merlion creature actually came about??the lion head of the creature recalls the story of the Legendary Sang Nila Utama... he saw a lion in Singapore while hunting.... this gave rise to the name Singapura (the lion city)... which later evolved into the country's modern name.
on the other hand... the fish body reminds Singaporeans of their ancestors' lives as Orang Laut (Sea People), and Singapore's humble origins as a small fishing village....all my life... i thot the merlion statue could be found in two places... one at Sentosa as mentioned... and the other esplanade...a shameful Singaporean admits...and earlier... i discovered another statue that was standing on the island of Singapore... one which was not as tall as the one at Sentosa... not as tall as the one at esplanade either.. a miniature of both... the discovery came about only when the peeps decided to go riding.. and ended up at mount faber... somewhere right at the top... stood the majestic creature...
standing proudly amidst the bright lights that surrounds it...i hugged it tight... climbed on it... marking the victory of finding another merlion which i never thot do exist there...now where else in Singapore do these creature stands?
